In my humble opinion, 2008 was a great year for games on the whole. However, it’s time to move into the next year, and as the industry gears itself towards a year of Credit Crunch - beating, it’s not only economical problems that are scaring Developers. Hideo Kojima, evil mastermind/ Genius behind the Metal Gear series is worried that games just don’t “translate globally”.
That’s an odd statement, coming from a man who knows more about how to sell games around the world than anybody else, but I guess he’s just concerned for the industry he works in. He told Japanese magazine Famitsu that he’s in
the process of “start[ing] from zero” with his studio Kojima Productions, in an attempt to create a team “that can challenge foreign creators and software houses.”
I’d like to thank Kotaku for bringing this next quote to my attention:
“I’ve thought a lot about how Western games have been winning, looking it from a global perspective, and there are things that I’ve noticed…
I’ve come to understand that the way we’ve made games up until now won’t translate globally, and I’ve come to think that I need to make Kojima Productions a team that can compete alongside the rest of the world.”
To me, this almost confirms Kojima’s next title to be multi-platform to the PS3 and 360, and it would be great to see him do something for the PC. Another thing that Western developers are doing far more than their Eastern counterparts, is incorporating a deep and meaningful multiplayer portion to their games. This is something that Kojima attempted with Metal Gear Online, but it didn’t work so well. I’d like to point out that the reason why Eastern developers haven’t been so keep to introduce heavy multiplayer components into their games isn’t because they are in some way “inferior” to Western ones, the main reason is tat there’s not a high enough demand for multiplayer in places like Japan. People value their online privacy more, I guess. Despite this, multiplayer is definitely something that Kojima could do with embracing if he truly wants to dominate the world (of games).

The new issue of Edge Magazine has a great interview this week with some people from Naughty Dog, the developer working on the Uncharted series (and Jak and Daxter before that, and before that Crash Bandicoot).
The interview gives new information about Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, which we already knew revolves around Marco Polo, and a new, stealthier form of gameplay, to mix things up a little from the standard platforming and run-and-gun combination that the first game relied on.
I always feel bad doing these pieces because there’s not much that I can do to make this my own writing, so what I think will be best is that I ‘ll just add the quotes:
“we’re going with Marco Polo. Our catalyst is this man who cataloged all of his journeys — all the details of everything that happened in his life — but despite that he left one gaping hole.”
That hole is 1292. Polo left Kublai Khan’s court for Venice, commanding a fleet of 14 treasure-laden ships and a crew of 600 plus men. By the time he arrived home in Venice, he was down to one ship and a dozen or so survivors. “He never once said anything about what happened to him… And on his death bed, after people had called him a liar for what he had spoken about in his book, he said: ‘I didn’t say even half of what I saw.’”
They also claimed that this game would use up all of the PS3’s processing power, compared to the original, which used only 30%. That basically means that it’s going to look and play extremely smoothly, we hope. Naughty Dog also explained that there would be another love interest for Nathan, a fellow treasure hunter named Chloe, which should be great, one of the most interesting things about the series for me is the way in which the characters interact.
There we have it, we’re one step closer to understanding the whole picture of what this damn game really is. All I need to know is whether the dialog will be as funny as it was in the first game. Fun times, I’m sure.

In the world over it’s that magical time of year which can only mean the battle for the christmas top spots: music, film and of course games. Over in the US you’ll have to wait a month for this but in the UK the fight for Christmas number one is over. This years number one is Fifa ‘09 which certainly deserves its title. Fifa 09 made history after it became the first Fifa to be rated higher than Pro Evolution Soccer by fans and critics alike. What’s also great is that bookies favorite COD failed. It’s always good to see an underdog win.
Here’s the UK top ten for Christmas:
1. FIFA 09
2. Call of Duty: World at War
3. Mario Kart Wii
4. Need For Speed Undercover
5. Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training
6. Wii Play
7. Quantum of Solace
8. Professor Layton and the Curious Village
9. Tomb Raider Underworld
10. Wii Fit
Not many surprises there, interesting to note that half of the titles on there are Nintendo exclusives (Wii fit, Professor Layton and the Curious Village, Wii Play, Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training, Mario Kart Wii) and furthermore most of them have been out well over a year.
So does the top ten surprise you? Would you like to see some other games in the top ten?
Comment and let us know or head over to our new forum!
